GAME RECAP: WESTFIELD

With good weather finally on their side, The India Point Ashwinders kicked off the new semester this Sunday with their first game against Westfield State. In the first game of the day, both teams looked evenly matched. The Ashwinders found plenty of opportunities to get near the opposing hoops, but the Westfield Keeper proved difficult to get past, seemingly appearing out of nowhere to block long-to-mid range shots. Chaser Jeremy Work and Keeper Nick O’Mara had more success dropping the Quaffle in at close range, allowing the Ashwinders to gain the lead, but the score remained within Snitch range up until the Seekers returned to the pitch. A well-timed Snitch catch by Max Rosenwasser gave IPA the win, with a final score of 110*-60 IPA.

The Ashwinders carried their momentum into the second match. Beaters Chris Carchedi, Rod Hasbun, Nathan Kingston, and Will Orton were able to hold onto

two Bludgers for most of the game, both shutting down the Westfield Chasers and opening up the field for IPA to score. The Ashwinders’ passing game showed phenomenal improvement.  A play that is one of the highlights of the season thus far, O’Mara carried the ball into Westfield territory but was met with heavy resistance just inside midfield. He promptly found Joy Yamaguchi open next to the far hoop and launched a pass right into her arms which she then dropped through the hoop for an easy score. Rosenwasser caught the second Snitch of the day, ending the game with a score of 140*-30 IPA.

Both India Point and Westfield were looking tired by the last match of the day, but fatigue didn’t stop either team from scoring more points than they had in the previous games. Chaser David Reich came on looking strong after having helped referee the previous match and produced the best shift of his career. Despite getting knocked to the ground while playing defense, he got back up and blocked a long shot after touching up to the hoops. Subsequently, he took the ball upfield quickly, broke through an arm tackle, and drove to the hoops for a scoring chance from point blank range. Quick transition was a theme for the Ashwinders. Decisive Beats on defense led to Work and Chaser Derik Wagner running the ball to the other end very rapidly for quick scores. The two captains combined for the 13 goals in the game and 27 on the day. Rosenwasser brought the final match to a close by grabbing the Snitch and ending the day with a hat trick, bringing the final score to 180*-60 IPA.Over the course of the day, IPA showed that their recent practices had paid off significantly. Offensively, the Chasers showed vast improvement in their positioning around the hoops, allowing them to find better passes and score. Meanwhile, the Beaters did a fantastic job of maintaining Bludger control for the majority of all three games, allowing the Chasers several opportunities to advance down the pitch unhindered.Next Sunday, the Ashwinders play against the University of Massachusetts in the last home game of the season. Brooms up is at 1:00 p.m at the India Point Park soccer field.
